Erma Bolick, 73
Anchorage resident Erma Florence Handke Bolick, 73, died peacefully Jan. 23, 2004, at
home.
A memorial celebration of life and a unity church service will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at
the First Congregational Church, 2610 E. Northern Lights Blvd.
Mrs. Bolick was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Atchison, Kan., to Emma and Edward Handke. After
graduating from Atchison County Community High School in 1946, she attended the University
of Kansas, where she earned a degree in German in 1951. She worked for the U.S. Army
attaches in Heidelberg and Bonn after college. Between her assignments, she studied German
at the University of Vienna. She married Gerald James Bolick in 1956 and the couple moved
back to the United States.
Mrs. Bolick worked as a secretary for Fred Bassetti and Co. in Seattle until 1973 when she
returned to the University of Kansas for graduate studies. After graduating with a master's of
business administration degree in 1975, she joined Rogers and Babler in Copper Center to
work on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline project. When the project was complete, she joined
Rogers and Babler's Anchorage office, first as office manager and later as controller. She
joined MB Contracting as the company controller in 1985 and worked there until her retirement
in 2000.
Mrs. Bolick founded the Seattle chapter of Architectural Secretaries Association in 1968 and
later became the association's national chairwoman. She and a partner published a handbook
for architectural secretaries in the early 1970s.
Mrs. Bolick was a very generous person who helped many relatives and friends further their
education. Her love of education will continue on through a planned giving scholarship to
UAA.
Mrs. Bolick is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Per Wangstrom; and their
two children, Abbey Wangstrom and Zoe Wangstrom of Anchorage; brother, Robert Handke
of Atchison; sisters, June Kautz of Lawrence, Kan., and Frances Williamson of Atchison.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Adella Handke.
Arrangements were with Kehl's Funeral Home.
