Lantmedicus och kannik (kanik) i Lund.
Johan Hupfauf:
Initial school references refer to him as coming from Horn, Austria. When enrolling at the
University of Rostock, he put down Hernals--now a part of Vienna (Wien), Austria--as his home.
He attended medical school in Wittenberg, Germany; Rostock, Germany (entered 1635); and
Leyden, Holland.(1639). Because of the religious conflict of the time, he could not return to
Austria and ended up practicing medicine in Lund, where he became a canon at Lund
Cathedral. To see a letter he sent Ole Wurm, the Danish, court physician, asking for help in
obtaining a degree, go to:http://archive.org/details/olaiwormiietade01bartgoog.
The letter, dated February 1637, indicates that he had been to see Ole Wurm the previous fall
in 1636, and now wanted to follow through on getting the degree. Check :"Hupfauff" in Google
Books to see the names of early medical texts he co-authored in Wittenberg (1630).
His father was Melchior Hupfauf, apotheke at Horn, Austria from 1598 to 1620, and
burgomaster from 1614-1616. He died in 1622. He was from from Leipzig, Germany; his first
wife was Mary Magdalena, and their children were Hans Melchior and Ana. (Composite of several
online Google books).
